What is the difference between a manufacturer’s warranty and a third party warranty or VSC?

A manufacturer's warranty is included with the purchase of a new vehicle and is provided by the maker. Third party warranties are offered by companies independent providers.

A manufacturer’s warranty is included with the purchase of a new vehicle and is provided by the vehicle’s maker. Generally speaking, a manufacturer warranty is designed to protect car buyers from manufacturer defects that existed during the process of making your car. These coverages protect your paint, your powertrain, and other basic components but don't cover you with "bumper to bumper" coverage.

A third-party warranty, however, is purchased separately from an independent provider and often offers extended coverage beyond the manufacturer's terms or for used vehicles. These coverages can be both wider and more varied mechanical protection, protection with more complex electronics, or ancillary coverage on things like theft protection or cosmetic tire & wheel replacement.
